American Lauren Davis won her first WTA title by defeating Croatian teenager Ana Konjuh 6-3 6-1 in the Auckland Classic final on Saturday.

The early exits of top seeds Serena and Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki left the final being contested by players ranked 47 and 61 in the world.

The 23-year-old Davis, who lost two finals in 2016, is one of the tour’s smallest players at just 5ft 2in.

“The feeling is indescribable, to win my first WTA title,” said Davis.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for quite a few years,” added the world number 61.

Elsewhere, world number 52 Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic also won her first WTA tour title when she beat eighth-seeded American Alison Riske 6-3 6-4 in the final of the Shenzhen Open in China.

The 20-year-old, who knocked out British number one Johanna Konta in the semi-finals, had lost her two previous WTA finals at the Swedish Open and the Japan Open in 2016.

A car bomb ripped through a busy commercial district in a rebel-held Syrian town along the Turkish border Saturday, killing nearly 50 in a huge explosion that damaged buildings and left rescuers scrambling to find survivors amid the wreckage, opposition activists said.

Rescuers and doctors said the explosion was so large there were nearly 100 wounded and burned. Over 50 wounded were transported to the Turkish border town of Kilis for treatment, as local hospitals couldn’t cope.

Esteban Santiago went to baggage claim and picked up his one piece of checked luggage.
There were no other bags, just a case with a handgun inside.
Santiago allegedly took the 9 mm handgun out of its case and fired at other travelers Friday afternoon, killing five people at the Fort Lauderdale airport. On Saturday, authorities revised the number of wounded to six after earlier saying eight.

A few months earlier he reportedly had a mental evaluation after a bizarre visit to an FBI office in Alaska.
Friday’s shooting sent the airport terminal into chaos, with people running for cover. They started running again when rumors of more gunshots and a possible second shooter spread through the busy airport. Almost 40 others would get hurt in the rushed evacuation after the attack. Some suffered sprains and bruises; others had broken bones.
Here’s what we know about the deadly shooting and what officials have said about the suspect:
